Domestic brands use home advantage in China smartphone market

Thanks to their low-price strategy, China-made smartphones have registered phenomenal shipment figures in the first half this year, snapping up 40% of domestic market share. The success of the pricing strategy is due in part to the subsidies of telecom carriers.

Statistics from the China Academy of Telecom Research under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, show that in the first half this year, shipments of mobile phones in China hit 200 million handsets, including 94.855 million smartphones.

According to Beijing Business Today, industry insiders estimate that shipments of mobile phones in China may surpass 400 million this year thanks to unprecedented replacement demand, mainly for smartphones.

In contrast to the dominance of Apple and Samsung in the global smartphone market, indigenous brands account for 43.3% of China's smartphone market, followed by Samsung with 22.2% and Apple with 7.1%. Domestic brands boast lower prices, convenient sales channels and increasingly complete after-sales service.

Leading internet firms have intensified the competition in the smartphone market. 360buy.com, which specializes in mobile phone sales, recently rolled out the Android-based "Small Pepper" smartphone at a price of only 699 yuan (US$110). With their rapid response to the market and solid understanding of the preferences of local consumers, domestic brands have surpassed international brands in tapping the rapidly expanding market.

Domestic brands also owe their rapid emergence to the enthusiastic support of telecom carriers. After several rounds of sales campaigns for smartphones in the 1,000 yuan (US$157) bracket, mobile phone makers have teamed up with carriers to push sales of smartphones even lower. Beijing Telecom has slashed prices of five mainstream smartphones from 1,000 yuan to 790 yuan (US$125) and offered 990 yuan (US$150) of credit into the bargain. Sales of Huawei's C8812 phone through Beijing Telecom hit 1 million units in just five days after its launch.

Elsewhere, however, telecom giants China Telecom and China Unicom have begun to cut subsidies for domestic brands due to their declining profits. China Unicom used to offer a 50% subsidy for smartphones in the 1,000 yuan bracket but plans to lower the subsidy to 20%-30%.

China's smartphone market was the biggest in the world for the second quarter of the year, accounting for 27% of global smartphone sales with 158 million handsets, according to market research company Canalys Research.

The top smartphone producers in China were Samsung, ZTE, Lenovo, Huawei and Apple. The emergence of domestic brands such as ZTE has accelerated the development of the country's smartphone market, said Canalys Research.

Shipments of ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei phones have grew 171%, 265% and 252% for the period, respectively. Local brands have been putting greater efforts into promotion and enhancing their ties with retailers, the market research company added.

Apple's new iPad receives chilly reception in China

The release of Apple's new iPad has received a lukewarm reception in China, raising speculation that the dominance of the global consumer electronics giant could be fading, reports the Shanghai-based First Financial Daily.

Apple's third-generation iPad was finally released in China on July 20, four months after it had debuted abroad. Part of the delay was due to a lengthy legal battle between Apple and Taiwan-based LCD manufacturer Proview over ownership of the "iPad" trademark in China, which was settled earlier this month for US$60 million.

Despite the highly publicized launch, less than two dozen customers were seen lining up outside Apple's main Beijing store moments before the 8am opening time, a stark contrast to the hundreds who camped out for the release of the iPhone 4S in January. Apple staff were also spotted removing the barriers intended to organize the large crowds that never appeared.

A similar scene was also reported across Apple stores in Shanghai and Guangzhou, where the number of reporters outnumbered the customers.

An Apple spokesperson attributed the poor showing to the company's new sales strategy, which it said was focused on pre-sale orders. From July 19, customers have been able to place their orders on Apple's official website between 9am and 12pm, after which they would receive an email with a specified pick-up time, negating the need to line up, the spokesperson explained.

One Apple store shopper told the First Financial Daily that the new iPad no longer felt fresh because it had been released overseas for too long, and true fans would have already found other channels to acquire the device. More importantly, the new iPad is not perceived as particularly advantageous over the iPad 2 in terms of price or functionality, the shopper added.

The 3,688 yuan (US$577) price tag has been identified as another factor. For months, parallel importers have reportedly been selling the new iPad in China for around 3,200 yuan (US$500). The iPad 2, which has fallen to 2,500 yuan (US$390), may also be more attractive for price-sensitive customers.

Industry analysts suggest the reason could be more fundamental, in the sense that recent Apple products — beginning with the iPhone 4S — have lacked the revolutionary features that made Apple so popular in the first place. While Apple has not stopped developing new features, it appears the company has reached a bottleneck in its innovation, analysts said.

China's iiMedia Research CEO Zhang Yi thinks the iPad market has reached a level of saturation. People who have not purchased the first iPad or iPad 2 are unlikely to start buying iPads now, he said.

In recent months, the market has also become flooded with tablets from competitors such as Samsung, whose products arguably offer the same functionality as the iPad. Industry giants such as Microsoft and Google have also recently brought out their own versions of tablet computers.

Wang Yuquan, president of the China division of American market research firm Frost & Sullivan, believes the absence of the late company founder Steve Jobs is a significant factor in Apple's declining dominance. Current CEO Tim Cook is more like a professional manager who is concerned about achieving balance as opposed to breakthroughs in innovation, Wang said.

Zhang told the First Financial Daily that Apple should have enough market power to hold off competitors for the next three years, although all bets are off by 2015, when the number of tablets is expected to exceed that of traditional laptops.

Apple to introduce iPhone 5, iPad Mini in September

Apple is planning to debut the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini at a special event on Sept. 12, US media reported on Monday.

Apple will unveil the sixth-generation iPhone at the event, with the release date to follow nine days later on Sept 21, according to technology blog site iMore. It noted that the information comes from sources who have proven accurate in the past.

The report said the iPad Mini will also be announced at the event, along with a new iPod Nano and iPod Touch. But iMore said they have not heard a release date for the iPad Mini.

Long rumored to debut the new iPhone in October, Apple has recently reported to be ready to go as early as September. Last week, French website App4Phone.fr said the release date will be Sept. 21, citing sources from manufacturers in China.

Some analysts said a September release date for the new iPhone would work financially for Apple, helping the company end the calendar third quarter on a high note with a possible heavy demand for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

For the calendar third quarter in 2011, Apple missed sales expectations for the first time in five years as consumers postponed purchases in anticipation of the iPhone 4S in October.

Samsung Beats Nokia, is Mobile Market Leader

Samsung reports record profits for Q1 2012 as it gains mobile market share through Galaxy and Note sales while beating Japanese rivals in the TV stakes.

Operating profits for Q1 2012 total $5.15 billion (or 5.85 trillion won), with 98% Y-o-Y growth. Accounting for 73% of total profits is a strong mobile division, with profits reaching $3.8bn.

The Galaxy Note proved to be something of a dark horse for Samsung, emerging as the surprise consumer hit of recent months. The company should also launch the next Galaxy S flagship smartphone later this week.

Total Q1 Samsung handset sales reach 93.5 million-- or 25.4% of the global mobile market according to Strategy Analytics. Such numbers make Samsung the current WW biggest mobile vendor, as Q1 2012 Nokia sales reach 82.7m units (with 22.5% market share).

The company appears to be turning the high-end smartphone market into a duopoly, with Apple as sole rival. According to Bernstein analysts, Samsung and Apple controlled 90% of the 2011 smartphone market.

Samsung also remains the biggest TV maker in the world, described by analysts as one of "the few global TV manufacturers making money and winning market share" as the top Japanese TV firms continue losing more and more cash.

The company is merging the Samsung Display LCD-making unit with OLED production unit Samsung Mobile Display and the remains of its earlier LCD venture with Sony-- creating the biggest flat-screen producer in the world.

Apple maintains top mobile PC market share

A latest report released Wednesday showed that Apple continued to dominate the mobile PC market in the first quarter of 2012, with the number of its shipments almost doubling the nearest competitor.

Apple shipped nearly 17.2 million mobile PCs — tablets and laptops — in the first quarter of 2012, capturing 22.5% of the market, nearly twice the share of its nearest competitor Hewlett-Packard, according to the Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report by research firm NPD DisplaySearch.

The strong demand for the iPad fueled Apple's mobile PC growth. The other brands in the top five, HP, Acer, Lenovo and Dell, relied on notebook PC shipments to establish their positions.

In the tablet market, Apple continued its dominance with a 62.8% share in the first quarter, with Samsung taking second place with a market share of 7.5%.

In the notebook and mini-notebook market, HP maintained the top ranking with a market share of 16.2%. Acer took the No. 2 position with 11.9%.

Total mobile PC shipments in the first quarter of 2012 were 76. 2 million units, an increase of 30% year-on-year, but a seasonal drop of 15% compared to the fourth quarter of 2011.

Global tablet PC shipments grew by 124% compared to the same period of last year, while notebooks and mini-notebooks grew only 12%.

From a regional perspective, the Chinese market stood out with quarter-over-quarter shipment growth in the first quarter of 2012, the report noted.

"The China region had sequential quarter shipment growth, achieving 13% for mobile PCs overall, 12% for notebook and mini-note PCs, and 16% for tablet PCs," said Richard Shim, NPD DisplaySearch senior analyst. "This is noteworthy given the sequential declines in all other regions as well as the declines in other product categories including TVs and monitors."

After the first iPad was introduced in 2010, the impact of mobile computing on the PC industry has been much clearer, along with the declining desktop demands.

In a presentation given in March, Apple CEO Tim Cook called iPad "the poster child of the post PC world," saying that Apple sold more iPads in the fourth quarter of 2011 than any PC makers sold of their PCs.
